Scars

Poverty in AF is overwhelming. It's everywhere; you can't hide from it. It leaves scars on children's faces and dims lights in their eyes. What will take to make them smile again?

Wonderful photo, Natalia! You are right, there is so much sadness in their eyes... These children don`t have childhood... And as sad as it is nothing can repair it for them. It`s always will be missed.

@Dan: Sand fly.Simple face washing could have helped to prevent this. Unfortunately, people are so poor and have no access to clean water or have no water at all. Hygiene is very poor and without basic good hygiene habits, many become ill with waterborne diseases. sand fly bites and lays eggs and if a child is not washed for days and weeks, it will become a huge cyst that bursts. It could lasts 1 year and the local name is soledona, wich means 'one year thing'.

The scars are of sort of severe bruise, may be they were hit by something sharp and due to no treatment, scar remained on their faces. I see hidden fear on their faces. May be they want to but could not due to circumstances, where there is war going on how can children go out and play with freedom, where there are number of foreign forces hunting down so called terrorists, its so strange why dont they realize when somebody fires at your home, in return you will never give flowers, you always have fear to get shot, so you also use weapon, but so sad that then you are called terrorists or militants etc... GOD guide all.

Great photo I whish did not exist and yet thank-you for showing us.
For any child to be so afraid...and hit so hard it leaves those horrible scars........I am speechless :(
